Oatmeal itself is gluten free. A serving size of oatmeal is typically 1/2 cup of uncooked oats. One cup of cooked oatmeal is 145 calories. Oatmeal is low in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar.
However, store bought oats are often contaminated with particles of other grains such a wheat, barley, and/or rye. These grains are not gluten-free, so you cannot be assured of a gluten free dish.
You do have the choice of growing your own oats, or shopping for special types of oatmeal. These brands may guarantee they are pure oat and gluten free.
A small percentage of people are allergic to avenin–which is in oats.
